Advice on playing Spellfire

LordAO

First Post
I'm thinking of playing a spellfire and wanted some advice from anyone who is familar with them. I will be a halfling rogue5/assassin 2 to start (which is great since I can sneak attack with spellfire bolts!). I've been looking at the Spellfire Weilder prestige class and it seems to me to be pretty weak. Does anyone have any suggestions for feats, classes or other abilites that will help me make good use of this ability? I would also appreciate any insights into playing one from people who have either been spellfire or had one in their group.

Thanks.

One thing to check with your DM is whether absorbing an incoming spell still requires a readied action. The original spellfire description explicitly states that the character acts as though he were a rod of absorbtion, then clarifies that with "he may ready an action to absorb a spell..." In 3.0, that's how it worked, but the 3.5 rod no longer requires a readied action (it's automatic so long as you're holding it). Until spellfire gets an official update, there's a pretty good chance it works like this now. :)

If you don't have to ready an action to absorb incoming spells, it would be a great improvement, as Spellfire Wielders aren't that powerful. I had one in my group when we played CotSQ, and he was the first to die. I mean, he could like absorb 30-40 spell levels and fire them off, but then he would have to recharge all over again, and he was practically useless but in the 1st round.
