Advice on wizard PC

The Toad is only for roleplaying & spellcasters who expect to see a lot of melee, like my Mage-brute builds. For everything else, they suck.

Spellcasters who see lots of melee should also probably choose the rat. You know, because things might try to poison them.

Haven't seen much in the way of poison attacks except from snakes & bugs...and the odd Drow, of course. More likely, you're going to see mundane weapons, and those extra HP will see you through to the next combat...or at least, the next strike.

YMMV, of course.

I figure Improved Toughness is better for HP. Or Toughness if you play at level 1-2.

As a familiar, the rat is better than the toad, even if we take out their special abilities.

I agree that the rat is better in general.

Mage-Brutes, for one, can't take Toughness at low levels. They need those early feats for the proper Heritage feats chains- any one of draconic breath, infernal howl, celestial lance are integral to the builds. That means no toughness feat, which leaves the Toad as the source of extra HP.
