AEG and OGL

I honestly don't care one whit what they do or don't do with their products.

It just seems odd to me that a large publisher like AEG can't get it right when so many of the smaller publishers do. Especially given that AEG's been putting out OGL products since early 2001 (If memory serves).

I could understand it in their first couple of products, but Magic is at least their 13th product.
AEG is a large publisher? I don't think so. But correct me if I'm wrong.

how big do they have to be. They have 50 products listed in the publisher page. The produce not only the one word source books, but Rokugan, and Spycraft too. With the L5R licence they have been big since before d20.

Hmm...they have at least 15 d20 products.

Aside from WotC and SSS, how many other publishers have at least 15 d20 products?

Mongoose?

Fine. How many non-d20 products does Mongoose have?

AEG has at least as many non-d20 products as d20 products. I don't know about you, but that makes me consider them fairly large.

It has been pointed out to me that Section 6 is ambiguous on this front regarding the updating of Section 15.

SECTION 6:

Notice of License Copyright: You must update the COPYRIGHT NOTICE portion of this License to include the exact text of the COPYRIGHT NOTICE of any Open Game Content You are copying, modifying or distributing, and You must add the title, the copyright date, and the copyright holder's name to the COPYRIGHT NOTICE of any original Open Game Content you Distribute.

Now, notice that in the last part, it does not say you have to add the title, copyright date and copyright holder's name to the Copyright Notice portion of this license (ie: Section 15).

Just to the Copyright Notice.

That is a serious distinction, as you can place a Copyright Notice anywhere in your book, not only in the Section 15.

Sure it's semantics, but that IS how it is written.

SECTION 6:

<break>

You must add the title, the copyright date, and the copyright holder's name to the COPYRIGHT NOTICE of any original Open Game Content you Distribute.

I don't follow you, Jason. It seems they are arranged in backwards order, but to me it says you must update the COPYRIGHT NOTICE of your content (that section after the break) and it also says that you must update Section 15 with the exact text of that COPYRIGHT NOTICE (before the break).

What this says to me is that Section 15 IS NOT the COPYRIGHT NOTICE in and of itself. So everyone's concern about recursive/overlapping/repeating Section 15's is misplaced.

Clark Peterson/Necromancer has gone down this road with their new monster book, explaining how to include the EXACT TEXT OF THE COPYRIGHT NOTICE to your Section 15-- you do not have to include the EXACT TEXT OF SECTION 15.

All in my opinion, and IANAL, though I continue to have a healthy and inquisitive interest in the whole matter!

Is freelancing economically more feasible for game publishing businesses, or it is better to have such individual on payroll? What are the pros and con?
