AEG: Have you ever thought about EDITING your products?

Kaptain_Kantrip

First Post
All your "one word" books, all your adventure keep boosters, and now Swashbuckling Adventures (the worst offender since EVIL) are not properly edited. Dozens of typos, ommissions, rules that are vague, improper or not even given, or complete and utter failure to properly convert AEG RPG mechanics to d20 are rampant! These are killing the public's enthusiasm for your products! It's like you don't even CARE about the quality of most of the d20 products you are publishing (Spycraft and Rokugan excepted). Why do you keep raising prices? The extra money should be going into paying for an EDITOR who knows what he's doing!

That said, I do find your d20 products to have a lot of good ideas in them (some rough, some polished). I am upset because your products are not living up to their full potential. Case in point being the new Swashbuckling Adventures book. There are dozens and dozens of errors in this book (mostly failure to convert 7th Sea rules to d20, the whole point of the book!). Fighting styles mention weaknesses an opponent can exploit, then fail to provide rules for them. Many rules are improperly/incompletely converted between systems. This book could have been as great as Spycraft given proper editing and a little more time. Swashbuckling Adventures will doubtless leave a sour taste in the mouth of the gaming public, despite the fact that it is a treasure trove of crunchy bits in between the errors, and turn gamers away from 7th Sea (at least as a viable d20 setting).

Please hire a new editor who knows what he's doing! I shouldn't have to go through your books with a fine tooth comb to weed out mistakes or house rule them to make them work properly. That is AEG's job, and that is what I am paying you guys for when I buy your products: A professionally edited, polished product loaded with great ideas and crunchy bits. So far, you've only got the first half right (and even your track record there is a bit spotty with the various one word books).

A lot of companies are like that. Usually the ones with the more agressive publishing schedules, though even some that don't put out a lot of products.

My guess is, it's mostly a matter of time & money. They're in a hurry to get the product out, and they don't have the money to hire a good editor.

We where just talking about this on another tread in here, even mentioned the same publisher ;-)

Btw, AEG kinda lost me, but this is the D20 version of 7th Sea or not? I was kinda hoping for a similar book like Rokugan...

It is 7th Sea d20; it's just a botched translation that requires a fair amount of work (house ruling) to properly use. Lots of fabulous feats, classes (core and PrC), equipment and of course, info on the world of 7th Sea are all included and useful within 7th Sea or any other fantasy setting (even ones that don't include gunpowder or swashbuckling). There is a lot of good stuff here, just too damn many errors lurking about. This could have been Spycraft or Rokugan quality if they hadn't rushed it.

I started this new thread here in the (vain) hope that someone from AEG might see it and respond.

Hey, AEG, you might also want to update your website more often, too. Sheesh!

Salutations,

You may want to write them.

I don't think AEG posts here. I have seen some of their contract writers, but I don't recall them making an official presence.

I do have to say I have gone from excitement to disappointment from all that Kap'n has reported. I was really hoping for a good fighting school system from AEG.

AEG will continue to put out books as they see fit and will have no reason to do otherwise unless sales drop off. You may want to ask yourself why people buy the books.

That is a good point.

I guess I will flip through the book at the lgs, and if it is as bad as reported.. I will have to pass.

What a shame.

Because they have great ideas and even in books that are perfectly edited I change things around. So, a I waste no elbow grease on their lesser products. I haven't seen this particuliar product, nor will I be getting it. I am a fan of their one word producs, although both Monsters and Gods has left a bad taste in my mouth. However, Dungeon, Dragon, Undead, War, and Evil get almost weekly uses in my game.

Hmm. I really liked Gods and Monster, more than the other one word books. Go figure. And Swashbuckling Adventures has more good ideas in it than all their one word books combined so far.

People buy AEG products for the great ideas, even if they are imperfectly executed. That's why I buy them, and will probably continue to do so in the future. I find them far more creative than most other companies d20 products, even if I have to house rule a bunch of each book.

And Crothian, none of AEG's books are "perfectly edited" but I know what you were trying to say, and do the same thing. ;)
