AEG: War

How many of you out there have bought this book? I am quite disappointed with it. I bougth it today, read it and am taking it back tomorrow.

From all the advertising on it, I assumed it would be a 3E "Battlesystem", boy was I wrong. It had at the most 4 whole pages on mass combat for d20. The had a basic and advanced type of system, and they both were VERY cryptic in clarity.

I mean, if I wanted to develop a percentile type system where attacked takes some percentage of losses for a battle and defender too.. I could have done that myself. And no where in there does it integrate magic into the fray.

The book came with 15 prestige calsses... I am tired of all the publishers pumpimg them oput as filler material...YEah, I know this sounds like a rant...and I guess it is... but I sure was looking for something other than what was advertised.

Does anyone know of an actual d20 mass combat book coming out?

High Hopes....

Well, I sure did too... It is the first book I have bought in awhile that I did not wait for a review, well... I just found out how to do one myself.

I mean, it was not a bad book if you wanted 80 percent of it one the intricicies of war (which was decent) and 15 percent PrC's, 3 percent siege weapons and 2 percent mass combat.... I am looking for 80 percent mass combat is all...

I liked it, but then I really like all of AEG's source books because they put effort in telling you things and it's not filled to the point of overflowing with crunchy bits. Personally, I don't want a mass combat system and I'm glad they had just a little one. IT truely is a sourcebook about War. It has pretty much everything you need to run a campaign. And that's what I like about their books. Who needs rules to run a large battle?

I need one, I want one and that is what I thought I was getting at the time. I have read enough books already about medievel wars and can run a campaign fine without it, but I want a mass combat system to play with. I like grand scale of playing, so I want a good system.

I had it high on my priority list to buy and after thumbing through it, decided to wait. I think it has some interesting concepts around PrC's, magic in battles and such, and could be a good source-book for a campaign that is based on a war, or has lots of them, but I found the book lacking in combat mechanics. So, maybe AEG's intention was to put out more of a source-book(i.e., flavor, PC possibilties, etc.) and less of a rules-book.

80% mass combat...

I agree whole heartedly, first i thought chainmail would be WotC's ansewer to mass combat for D&D. No way though it's thier ansewer to warhammer. Now it turns out warwar is a bust and from what i here the system in quintisential fighter is no good. HURN! when will somebody deliver?

I agree holeheartidly. From what Chainmail people said was that they would continue to come out with more supplements to increase the size of troops used, at least that is what I thought I read. But I see nothing on the horizan for it.

I guess maybe it is time for me to make my own system and market it! :D

And I do think MANY people other than myself would enjoy having a complete system.

Has anyone seen/tried the War Machine mass combat rules from the D&D Rules Cyclopedia? It's rather abstract, but could be easily adapted to 3e with a bit of work.

War Machine mass combat rules

No, Colonel, I have not seen it or heard of it. I do have a download of a conversion attempt at battlesystem to 3E.. but because I lack the 2E battlesystem it does me no good!

I didnt want this to come out as a complete flame to AEG, I have bought many of their products and am happy with them, this is just not one of them.
