AEG: War

I feal kinda bad now too, i recomened this book to my dm, he's looking for mass combat rules for our current high level campaign.
Unfortunatly he doesn't go on-line or read any magazines or resurch peodocts in any way before he buys them. WHOOPS!

I can see where you'd be disappointed thinking the book was one thing and after buying realizing it was something else. The book has great info. It truely is a Sourcebook, and not a Rulesbook. THe other Books have by AEG are that way also. That's why I like them. WE have probably 10 solid companies that produce books for d20 and the rules stuff is what most give us. I'm glad AEG is doing Source Material that is generic and easy to use.

Is anyone else making a mass combat system? I understand that just cause I don't need one, doesn't mean there shouldn't be one. And, frankly, if someone wrote a really good system for it I'd be tempted to use it. QF's version was okay. I just read it, never tried it. I haven't even read that section in War yet.

Sourcebook versus system.

Indeed I was looking for a system intstead of a source book. I am really looking for a good D&D or d20 mass combat system. I hope some developers look at this thread and hopefully one will be on the way.

Eden Games is supposed to release a supplement called Fields of Blood sometime this summer. That release date is not set in stone though. The book was first announced for release last fall, and keeps getting delayed. The writer of the book, Matt Colville frequents these boards and may be able to give us some more information on it (Please? ;)).

From the looks of it, it looks like it's going to be all system... mass combat, kingdom running, the whole nine yards.

Why wait for a mass combat system. There are dozens of table top wargames out there. Just pick one to resolve your battles. If you think about the scale of an average battle, you will realise that an individuals actions won't ammount to much.
I resolve the main battle this (abstract) way and I zoom in to see what the characters are doing. This way you can play the actual battle and continue role-playing at the ususal tactical level. Especially heroic or dramatic episodes might result in a morale modifier.
the main contribution a high level character will have in a battle will be on gathering information and responding accordingly.
Did you say magic? I don't think the D&D spells are that powerfull to be used in a battle. I also don't believe that the average D&D wizard will likely go near a battle field with his d4 hit die and aroows flying, cavalry charging, giants rampaging,...
D&D is great for skirmish style combat, use it that way and leave the grand tactical for another system.

(It isn't that simple of course, but that's why there has to be a DM :) )

Has anyone seen/tried the War Machine mass combat rules from the D&D Rules Cyclopedia? It's rather abstract, but could be easily adapted to 3e with a bit of work.

I was reading it a few weeks ago, and think it would work quite nicely. It's abstract enough that the principles would apply to any version of the game.

Re: 80% mass combat...

I agree whole heartedly, first i thought chainmail would be WotC's ansewer to mass combat for D&D. No way though it's thier ansewer to warhammer. Now it turns out warwar is a bust and from what i here the system in quintisential fighter is no good.

You heard wrong. Just what is wrong with OMCS? I think it is a great system. Now the rest of TQF I am not so impressed with...

WAR has two mass combat systems... one is a fairly sketchy unit combat systems. IMHO, you are better off with OMCS. The second is a abstract large scale mass combat system that deals with PCs by an event table... which is something that Bushido did, and I like. I think that system actually looks pretty useful when it comes to running a war but keeping the attention focussed on the characters.

I just noticed a review of War on EN... It echoed my very sentiments.. Wow.. I could have written that myself!

There is no review of WAR on ENWorld. It's not even in the Database yet.

Perhaps you meant the one linked to on GameWyrd on the front page?
