After being DM can PLAYING ever be as good?

I was just wondering what folks views are on this. Most people start off as players then become DM at some stage when they get to know the game. Once you become a DM has it affected your enjoyment as a player in later games?

The reason I ask this is because I started at 1e D&D as a player and absolutely loved it. I became a DM after some time and most of our group took turns at running adventures or campaigns. The knowledge I obtained as a DM about the nuts and bolts of the game meant that I don't think I ever enjoyed playing quite as much afterwards. I knew too much about the monsters/traps etc. It really takes something away from the game when as a player you have to avoid metagaming to exploit a monster's weakness that you current character would not know about. This is just one example. For me one of the big thrills of playing was the mystery of it all but I suppose it's inevitable that it will reduce even if you just play the game quite a lot, let alone DM it.

I had a break for a few years and now play 3.5 with pretty much the same group. 3.5 is such a different game altogether and there are so many new monsters and even old ones are subtly different. The mystery factor has returned for me and I am really enjoying playing at the moment. The only book I own is the PHB and I have not even opened any monster books. I only look at the DMG for PrCs.

We have one guy that nearly always DMs bless him but I know he also likes to play sometimes too. He has hinted that I should run a campaign for the group sometime but I suppose I am a bit worried about learning too much and losing some of the 'magic'. I probably will do it as I am not that selfish to play all the time and I did enjoy my time as DM many times before.

Just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience.

Not I. I usually DM, and have since the early days of 2e, but I love playing. Sure, I might know how the monster "works", but I don't know what it's going to do. Maybe you need more creative DMs?

I like playing very much, when I get to. I'm the designated DM, though, so it doesn't happen often.

Being a DM doesn't hinder my roleplaying at all. Knowing the monsters isn't that useful, because it's easy to modify them. Maybe I have a better grasp on when to run than my fellow players, but that's about it.

I don't find that it hampers my enjoyment. As long as the DM is good, of course.

But for me it's about the story and the RP. Combat is not as much fun around a table as a night filled with good RP. At least in my book that's how it goes. Thus, knowing the monsters doesn't normally affect the RP all that much.

I have only DM'ed for the last 9 months. In that time, I have only gotten to play at the roleplaying con back in September. It was still a lot of fun playing a PC.

One of my players has offered to DM for a couple of sessions so that I can watch how he DM's and see if I can pick up a few tricks. Even though it would only be for a few sessions I am definitely looking forward to it.

As for the metagaming part, I actually enjoy having my character do things that from a player's perspective is stupid but makes sense from my character's perspective. But I'm just strange like that! :D

I definitely prefer DMing to playing, and I think it is because I prefer to play to varied roles that the DM is responsible for. I prefer the creation aspect and the ability to step into "multiple personalities". I often get a bit bored with the same PC for long stretches, so DMing allows me to be creative, play different roles, and to be part of the whole.

My games are PC focused, the game is for them (or us, if you will), not for me to showcase my ego, or to beat up on PCs.

Ditto. I'm the primary DM for all three of my home groups, so, to scratch my "playing itch", I play in the RPGA.

I think the only problem I have with "going back to just being a player" is that I open my big trap and let the DM know when he's not screwing the PCs enough. :D
