After Ed Greenwood's FR: Gary Gygax's Greyhawk

What does the Gygax estate have to do with it? Doesn't WotC own Greyhawk?

They do, but I doubt they could call it "Gary Gygax's World of Greyhawk" without permission. Certainly, even if they legally can, they shouldn't.

I would be interested in such a project, but only if all parties felt it was done in an appropriately respectful manner.

Unless the Gygax Estate is hostile, how about if WotC made a deal with the Estate, and hired Eric Mona to edit this?:

E. Gary Gygax's World of Greyhawk campaign setting for D&D Next

The goal would be to present Greyhawk as it appeared in Gygax's home campaign.

Count me in!:D

While I would love to see a Greyhawk Campaign Setting that draws on the original materials, I don't think slapping Gary's name on it when he's not directly involved in it is a good idea. It just smacks of cynical opportunism to me.

I don't think I'd be comfortable with people rifling through a man's personal notes just to make a buck off his name.

I appreciate your sensitivity, but I don't think anyone was advocating printing his personal diary, but rather game notes or campaign notes that he willingly shared with his gamers and to be honest pretty much anyone who sent him a message on facebook. Of course i would hope a representative from his estate was around to oversee the process and use discretion(much in the same way Christopher Tolkien oversaw the printing of Tolkiens' later works). I personally don't think think a Gary would have a problem with his inheritors continuing to make money off of his game ideas, but i could be totally wrong.

The issue would be getting access to his personal notes regarding _his_ setting, not the one that's been published. They would need to contact the Gygax estate for that, if the notes are still around.

If this were to be done I'd strongly suggest they get Rob Kuntz in on it. He was the co-DM of the Greyhawk campaign.

Intro by Gygax's son who played in the campaign (Luke?).

Erik Mona as primary researcher and likely top author -- because he's the biggest expert on Greyhawk around.

Rob Kuntz in some role -- co-author, preface writer, perhaps chapter writer.

Commentaries on their characters from other people who played in the campaign.

That would be awesome.

I don't think it would be at all wrong for a professor to write about the notes, life, and work of Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Shakespeare, or Hemingway. In fact, that sort of thing happens all the time.

If I were Gary's ghost, or his family, I'd much prefer he be remembered than forgotten.
