re

One dead cleric killed by Boneshard skeletons due to a series of unlucky rolls and poor movement on his part. He should have stayed out of the line of battle, but he moved up and ended up dead when the skeletons focused on him. The party still survived with no healing. So you can play 4E without a healer which was good to know. And the game is a bit more of a challenge without a healer, but still doable.

That's it so far. We've had a couple of close calls, but as the player's level those close calls are becoming less and less.

Tanen, half-elven 1st level warlord, at the hands of Irontooth and his lackeys.

This encounter was almost a TPK. Three characters down, only the wizard left. She runs, and tricks the berserking Irontooth into attacking one of his allies. Two PCs roll natural 20s on their death saves in the same round! They recover and help the wizard mop up Irontooth, while the half-elf quietly expires.

This is the story of the party of 2 level 1 PCs, a Dragonborn Paladin and a Tiefling Warlock, created to run a few sample encounters. After succeeding on several tough encounters, they engaged a Halfling Slinger and his Iron Defender ally. Alas, both PCs were slain in the battle.

Eric, 3rd level human sword and board fighter, was dragged into the portal during Keep on the Shadowfell.

My whole party laughed at me until they realized I was carrying all the treasure.

so far no deaths in my group, although alot of close calls. has anyone had a ranged ranger die? They seem to be one of most survivable out of all the classes.

On a similar note, Monty, human 1st level warlord, at the hands of Irontooth and his lackeys. I'd warned the party repeatedly to run if things looked rough, but nooooooo.

Monty got knocked unconscious by Irontooth, then got caught in the blast of a firebreath from the kobold high priest. Unlucky.

My party has seen two deaths so far. Both of them resulted from characters being dropped to the negative-bloodied threshold; nobody has yet perished as a result of failed death saves, though we have had some exceedingly close calls - most notably in the session before last, when the eladrin warlord fey stepped to the far side of an animate spiderweb and then got trapped in said spiderweb, in a position where no other character could get to him to save him. He rolled a natural 20 on one of his death saves and was able to second wind; had that not happened, he would have been toast.

The first actual death happened in the very first session, when the fighter, Elgin, was eaten by rats. This was my first time DMing 4E, and I had not yet learned just how freakin' lethal swarms can be, especially against a party without a controller. Elgin was later brought back with the help of a limited-use resurrection artifact I put in.

The second death happened a couple sessions ago. The wizard, Nimue, was slain by a ghoul initiate of hunger - a custom elite monster of mine. She was at 4 hit points and the initiate scored a crit with its acidic blast. After much debate, the PCs chose not to use the resurrection artifact on her (the artifact in question is decidedly evil, and they're worried about the consequences of using it too often). She is buried in an ancient dwarven ruin.
