In the 3.5 DMG, under the entry for alchemical silver (pg 284-285), it lists Ammunition as costing +2 gp.
IMHO that means that each piece of ammunition (ammunition being singular) - arrow, bolt or bullet costs 2gp extra. However, my players are trying to convince me that the word ammunition is plural, and as a result the +2gp cost is for a bundle of arrows (20), bolts (10) or bullets (10) as per the standard projectile sales quantities listed in the 3.5 PHB (pgs 116-117).
I checked the Webster definition of ammunition, and the word is plural, so my it appears my players have some "ammunition" for their argument.
However, I just double-checked the 3.0 PHB, and it lists silver arrows as costing 1gp each. I also vaguely recall silvered arrows costing about 2gp in either 1st or 2nd edition. I assume that the new price in 3.5 is 2gp per unit of ammuntion, and that I am interpreting ammunition correctly as being singular. I doubt that the cost would have dropped that much (2 gp per 20), and instead the new price is slightly higher than it was in 3.0.
Does anyone have a definite answer on this?
