Alertness

A character with the feat alertness gains his first wizard level. Once he has aquired a familar, does he

a) Always have +2 listen & spot (as per the feat description)

or

b) Always have +2 listen & spot, except when the familar is within "arms reach", because then he has +4 listen & spot?

The Alertness feat does not stack with itself, and a familiar grants alertness as if the master had the feat. It's a virtual feat just like a ranger's ambidex+twf.
