Maybe it just took that long for a ship to go and come back and it is present day.
I'll likely watch at least the first couple to see if I like it. I never seem to watch things the day it comes out though. I like to wait until several episodes are out to binge a few.
It's set just before the first Alien film. So the tech is designed to look like it did in that movie.

Along with Remus, whoever is building these sets and managing the props is doing a great job of giving us that retro future 1970s vibe.
I would like to see the Aliens land in Louisiana here in the United States. Those swamp dwellers will eat anything and everything, so it'd be a nice reversal to see the Aliens are actually Cajuns hunting the xenomorphs for gumbo.
Edit: I should have said Romulus. Nobody cares about poor, poor Remus.

If the android (?) is aiming it at a specific point on Earth, they presumably want there to be potential hosts nearby, so no smashing it into the Sahara or the Outback.
I love the Aliens franchise, warts and all, but I hope this is more than a bunch of memberberries. But Fargo is consistently astonishing and very, very tense, so fingers crossed.
