The Milky Way is big. Current thinking is that it's 200,000 light years across, end to end.

About half that, AFAIK. But still it is pretty big.

Previous estimates were 100k to 160k light years. New research now suggests it's 200k, as I recall.

No matter what, though, Alien needs FTL and adding cryosleep to conserve resources (including the crew's mental health) makes sense.

And having a drive that's roughly 47 times the speed of light is a nice number to have in one's back pocket, as a DM.

It depends on were you consider the “edge” to be. There is a lot of stuff that is gravitationally part of the galaxy beyond the visible spiral of stars.

Yeah, that was one of my problems with Covenant and Romulus. I felt they were clearly trying to give us Ripley types instead of letting these people have their own stories.

That's definitely a plus, I agree. I felt that the show had some issues, but overall I've enjoyed it and I'm glad that they'll make a second season.

My only issue with the show was that it didn't end. I wish shows would complete a single story by the end of their arc. It's not like there can't be plenty of loose ends left with which to launch another season, but they should never feel like they're totally incomplete. IMO, obviously.
