Free League revealed two of the battlemaps that will be part of the Alien RPG Second Edition coming to Kickstarter this fall. The full-color maps will be 34x22 inches scaled to the RPG miniature set that will also be part of the upcoming Kickstarter.

The first map features the mining ship USCSS Fidanza, a Nostromo-style spaceship.

The second map is of the mining colony Jeremiah VI.

Both maps will be part of the adventure included in the Kickstarter, Rapture Protocol. A similar map of the colony Hadley’s Hope from the film Aliens will be feature in the Hope’s Last Day Starter Set, also part of the Kickstarter.

The maps are specifically designed to take advantage of the new edition's updated and expanded stealth mode rules. Free League also states, "Using these maps, the miniatures, and the updated rules, ALIEN RPG 2e can even be played as a miniatures skirmish game."

No launch date is available at this time for the Kickstarter, but the pre-launch page is available to sign up for notifications.

Huh. I'm sure there's an audience for this, but this feels like a shift from what the RPG was originally focused on.
I'm not necessarily a fan either (really liked the old more abstract maps that had a nice in-universe feel to them). It seems they want those more detailed maps because of the newly introduced/planned support for playing with miniatures.
But Tomas mentioned, the old map style would not completely go a away, and they would still use it for overview maps (this is from memory from the last League Longue, so potentially not 100% accurate).

I'm really on-board with the idea of more robust stealth rules and minis.

When I ran an Alien actual play recently, I think the only thing I would've changed would have been getting the Aliens out sooner and having some Isolation-type moments. If the stealth rules help emulate that experience, then I'm definitely down.

I often wonder about the direction RPGs often get taken in. Though, ive been spending time at the FLGS lately, and seeing whats popular, it suddenly makes all too much sense.
If I were into science fiction miniatures battles, I know I'd much rather do it in the Aliens universe than the Warhammer 40k one, even leaving aside that I'd need a second job just to support the Warhammer hobby.

These look extremely generic to me, I don't find them interesting at all. Nor do I find the idea to play with miniatures interesting. If this is an indication, I'm not sure the 2nd edition is going the right way.
