Well, Marv's primary motivation is to avenge his friends.

To do so, he's willing to 1) kill cops 2) torture the bad guy

To Marv, the ends clearly justify the means. I'd say that makes him Evil, by D&D standards.

He works outside/against the system , so I'd say that makes him Chaotic

He's actually a good example of a Chaotic Evil character that could function in a party of PCs without betraying the others. Though he would probably end up getting them all killed ;-). Some might call him Chaotic Neutral... I can see how people might disagree on the Neutral/Evil axis.

Neither traits preclude someone from being chaotic. Marv took things as they came, and was about as disciplined and formulaic as a kitten on meth.

The man was chaotic, and while compared to the other, actually evil bad guys in the film he wasn't on their level of wicked, he wasn't exactly good, either.

Marv was an anti-hero. That was the point of the character. He was the marginally bad guy that you root for, fighting the throughly bad guys you don't.

  • Practices and enjoys torture, and inflicts cruel punishment. Big point for Evil.
  • Kills evil people, but not innocents. Point for Neutral.
  • Willing to act against great Evil, even with danger to himself. Point for Good.
  • Self-sacrifice. Point for Good.
  • Completely disregards law. Point for Chaotic.
  • Personal morality. Point for Chaotic.
Overall: Chaotic Neutral.

Marv is capable of extremely selfless acts and has a healthy dislike for Evil for its own sake. He also protects the innocent when he can. However, he has an extreme ends-justifies-the-means attitude. This alone would be enough to prevent him from being Good under most definitions. On top of that, his motivations for the whole trip are dubious - pure revenge. Yeah, he gets angry at the Evil he encounters, but that's incidental.
