All About the Dagger

The dagger is by far if not my favorite, then one of the more prevalent items I give my PCs. I've used it from anything as mundane as a spare weapon in a boot to a holy symbol for Corellon. I count kukri, punching dagger, and throwing knives as 'daggers' and you might as well count main gauche (from AU) in there too.

Daggers of returning are the lightest, most concealable reusable ranged weapon in the game, and while the damage may kinda suck, its a consistent thing (if you have decent dex/BAB). I can't imagine adventuring without a dagger backing up one of my characters somewhere. I had a half-orc monk with a dagger that could cast Cure Lt Wnds 1/day, I mean whatever the game the dagger is there. Even my elven arcanist that ended up eschewing all weapons shot magic missiles that looked 'dagger-like'.

So, am I just a weirdo or does everyone else find this to be one of the more useful items to buy in the phb?

infinite slings are the most useful item in the phb.

they cost nothing and weigh even less.

they are a nice backup weapon for the right character. But I usually go with weapons that matcht the character like my Dwarf has light hammers as back up.

Daggers are cooler than hand axes and light hammers because you can take one into the king's banquet as a dinner tool when all other weapons are prohibited.

There have only been a handful of PCs without at least one dagger in my 9 years of gaming.
The ones that didn't start out with one usually found reason to get one. :)

I'm with you on this one. The only time a character of mine hasn't had a dagger is when I was playing a cleric in past editions.

I always thought that The Stehl from the Shanara series and the Subtle Knife from His Dark Materials were very cool magic items.

Got to say I agree with you, daggers are very very useful. Anyone know of a good knife fighter PrC.

Invisible blade from CW? If you want to throw them as well you can tack on some master thrower.
