All Hail the Mind Flayer!

I had a character who once taunted a mind flayer foe by saying that he wondered if mind flayers would make great dog food. Fortunately, the party defeated the mind flayer and his allies. (As a matter of taste, I did not make mind flayer dog food. Now, I can't speak for the rest of the party....)

Y'now, I just realized that in my 20+ years of gaming, I've never used mind flayers.

I've read and enjoyed the Illithiad (& Lords of Madness) made references to them, made thrallkin (a heavily watered-down PC version of a mind flayer), used intellect devourers and created a whole slew of mind flayer derivative stuff for my game (flesh engines come to mind). Heck, I've even run a good bit of Spelljammer stuff focusing on their plots. Heck, I've had my 1E mind flayer miniature for forever.

But I haven't used an actual mind flayer in one adventure that I can think of.

I'm going to have to fix that.

Haakon1,
hehe yeah, a great "brown trouser" moment! ;)
"Oooh cool pic...EEEK?!"

William
in one of our campaigns, the characters had escaped form Athas, ended up in Siigl, one character was a cleric/wizard, super high int/wis (being Athasian)...so, the mind flayers were slavering to eat his high class brains...! lol

Stormonu,
Nothing is quite so much fun as *pop! ...*pop!*...*pop!* as you have mind flayers dimension door in on the PCs and put the minis down! ;)
Though...one day...I'd love ot slam dunk the Colossal Red Dragon mini down on 'em...

Uder,
awww! :) Cuteness!

Ok here's another mind flayer pic I did a while ago: "Lunch on the Bridge v2"
mind flayers have a snack as they pilot their nautiloid, but a rescuer ocmes a calling...

In my current campaign is based off of buffy, the players are citizens in a city that was used by mind-flayers as a farm until an Orcish cult opened up a portal to hell in service of Asmodeus. The mind-flayer's portal home was closed indefinitely and they now (not so) secretly run the city while the watch work on a way to re-open the mind-flayer's portal.

It's been good fun and as you can imagine, a lot of mind-flayer goodness.

Awesome thread!

I´ve used a lot of Mind Flayers recently as the players made a fun Spelljammer romp through space and encountered a few Nautiloids on their way. Some brains eaten later they made it back to their home planet. Now I plan to have a few Mind Flayers plane shift to their homes for some tea and biscuits.

Edit: Ah, I created this thread. That explains why it is so awesome. :)
