All spells...why hasn't it happened yet?

Why hasn't someone designed a d20/ogl magic system that utilizes ALL spells for use by a "magic" using class? One class...all spells.

Example...a wizard or mage or whatever can have access to all 1st level spells...arcane and divine.

Due to some funky rules-lawyering, an Archivist (from Heroes of Horror) can technically do this (they can learn anything they can find on a divine scroll; by using the co-operative creation rules, it's technically possible to create divine scrolls of arcane spells). Even given the rational ruling that they can't do that, a pretty big percentage of spells are available to at least one divine casting class, and so to archivists (domain spells are the biggest reason why, though non-PHB divine casters also help).

The Conan OGL has one magic using class "the Scholar", and they have access to all their spell list.

In my current Eberron campaign I replaced Cleric/WIzard/Sorcerer with one class called the Scholar - they are exactly like a wizard except:
d6 HD
Can choose spells from wizard or cleric list freely.

The Scholars in the priesthood claim their magic comes from the gods. The scholars who work for the dragonmarked families claim it comes from Xendrik, or the planes, or the goblins or... wherever!

Cheers

Arcana Evolved does have one spell list. As lukelightning noted above, the only difference between the classes is their access to simple, complex, or exotic spells, or spells of a particular descriptor, and how many spells they can cast each day.

I am currently favoring the Elements of Magic - Revised spell system. It doesn't quite let you pick any spell, but you can choose from any spell list and create your spells.

Well, you can only choose from your lists. But still a good system.

Wonder if we'll see another POD. They ran through the last run awful fast.

I like reading comments like these.

Right now I'm working on a slight revision of the system for a freelance gig, and I look forward to turning that into an actual book before the end of summer. But Elements of Magic - Revised - Revised seems a little odd.

Perhaps, "New and Improved - Elements of Magic - Revised: Now with Even More Revisions!" would be more to your liking? Something along the lines of Mythic Earth, where it gets a subtitle.

Back on topic, though. The new class that I've been working on for my next campaign will be the only spellcasting class, and it will be able to wear armor and cast fireballs and heal. That is to say, it will have a big, diverse spell list.

One single casting class and doing away with the three casters would probably be cool. No more overshadowing the fighter types by the cleric and druid and it opens up the fourth slot in a party to other classes.

Right now, you pretty much need a wizzie and a cleric, and a fighter type really is a must. That pretty much leaves rogues for the fourth. If you could combine wizzies and clerics, then maybe a little more diversity in adventuring groups could be done.

When I saw the Archivist my first thought was that this was what a spell caster should look like.

I'd like to do a campaign where the only full caster is the Archivist with full access to arcane and divine spells. The only other magic classes are speciality casters like Shadowcasters or Incarnate, or partial casters like the Paldin and Ranger. Probably call the Archivists Archmages and the others are practioners of lesser schools of magic.

Unearthed Arcana.

"Generic Spellcaster"

Balanced, usable, and infinately customizable. Better than that, OGL, too.

Use it and have fun. :)

Neat, RW is making a new version of EoM :D Dude, I love than book - and Genshou for buying it for me :D

Okay, but how about Elements of Magic - Revised II sound to you? or Elements of Magic - Uber Revision? Or Elements of Magic - Revised: The Definite Revised Edition?
