Actual real-world applications, latinised naming traditions and colours of imaginary "energy types" aside, I think we can all agree that
ice + acid = stupid.
Considering that I think Ice+acid makes a fine combination...no, I dont think 'we' can all agree on that.

What, exactly, is stupid about mixing acid + ice? Shooting frozen acid seems like a nifty idea to me, actually. Nevermind you can do it in 3.5 already.

It's not so much that it's particularly stupid, but I think most people see very litle thematic connection.

Do you disagree? What is the connection, IYO?

What are you thinking of?

So you think a player shouldn't be able to create a character before the game?
I don't think a player should be able to create a character without talking to the DM about things like setting, house rules, expectations, or allowed and disallowed optional rules, so I don't suppose that adding deities to that list--at least for the few weeks before everyone is basically familiar with the deities anyway and the SRD is online with the relevant information--is such an albatross around the player's neck.

Acid makes you melt.

Cold makes you freeze.

Can you see the disconnect there?

Temperature is also a big factor when dealing with acids. Generally speaking, the solvent capacity of an acid decreases in proportion with its temperature, and is greatest when an acid is near its boiling point...not its freezing point.

But that's the real world. Don't let petty things like science ruin your fantasy game. :)

Nope.

When creating a wizard character in a recent[ish] campaign who was the home-brewed equivalent of the water genasi, I focused on exactly those two categories of spells as being most thematic. :)
