Alt. to Summon Familiar for Wizards?

I was wondering what, if at all, people are using as alternatives to the summon familiar ability for wizards. I have a player asking if there was something else that could be exchanged. And I haven't come up with anything.

Yeah, the wizard in my game isn't exactly a pet person, grump that he his. [grin]

So I gave him a extra wizard feat, which he took as a magic craft feat.
