Alter Self and Warforged PCs

Couple of questions:

Could a Warforged character cast alter self to look like a human?

I believe the answer is yes, which takes me to my next question: when so altered, if someone felt of his face would he feel like skin or like metal?

Can Warforged characters smell?

Alter Self only allows the caster to change into a creature of the same type. As such, a Warforged (being of the type Construct) could only change into a Construct.

Disguise Self, perhaps, is what you're thinking of? In which case, it is an illusion that changes appearance only, not tactile senses.

No clue on whether warforged smell--I guess it depends on when they had a bath  (sorry, couldn't resist...).

My reading of the warforged entry is that they don't NEED to breathe, but are not necessarily inhibited from taking in air (which is necessary for smelling). I'd say they have a sense of smell, as lacking one of the 5 senses could have a definite impact on their ability to perceive and interact with the environment. Just IMHO.

Warforged to human - no. Alter self retains type. Remember, Alter Self is like mini-polymorph now. You don't look like a human, you -become- a human.

Can Warforged characters smell? - yes, like a machinist's shop.

Got me to thinking about what a warforged could alter self into. Valid forms would thus be (from the WotC monster books only):

Monster Manual
Animated Object (Small, Medium, and Large) & Homunculus

Monster Manual II
Automoton (Hammerer and Pulverizer), Bogun, Clockwork Horror (Electrum), Dread Guard & Raggmoffyn (Tatterdemanimal and Common)

Fiend Folio
Iron Cobra, Maug, & Necrophidius

I wouldn't have a problem with a warforged character that was actually built to look human. Heck, it could even be a class feature for a spy/assassin type of prestige class.
