Alter Self give you different equipment?

After reading the alter self spell, i'm still confused. While i know that their bodies change as far as they want (well, to a imited extent). But does it change equipment your carrying? such as would a Wizard/Rogue be able to carry a shortbow, and swords and knifes etc etc, use alter self to change into a guard carrying a halberd, and wearing scale mail, and then to revert later on, back into your 'original' form?

In short, no.

You alter your appearance and form - including clothing and equipment - to appear...

You could make yourself look like a guard carrying a halberd, and wearing scale mail, but I would not allow any changed stats. Your "halberd" hits like a dagger. Note this jibes with the "natural armor ... do not change" except with normal armor.

I'm sure some one else will come around and prove me wrong, like a certain smurf.

I'd say that the line "The spell does not confer... the attack forms... of the chosen form" covers the chosen form 'guard-with-halberd'.

You don't get guard-with-halberd's attack form of "Halberd +4 melee", or whatever.

i would assume that alter self would actually give you a halberd (e.g. a halberd that does d10 damage, etc etc, yet if your non-proficient, you'll be lucky to pass the guards without looking out of place with that hlaberd)

as to hyp's question, i didn't imply does it give you the guards abilities, but simply whether it grants ...'physical materials'...such as if you were a wizard, who lost his clothes, could you use alter self, to create yourself another robe (until the spell expires)?

It's not an illusion.

It's a dagger in the shape of a halberd, that deals damage like a dagger, and leather armor in the shape of scale mail, that protects like leather armor.

As Loki points out, if you alter your form to have the plates of an armadillo, you receive no natural armor bonus. You have the shape of an armoured creature, but you don't receive the mechanical benefits of that protection.

while the halberd that really is a dagger, deals the same damage as a dagger etc, does it FEEL like a halberd? if someone else (an NPC or even another PC) interacts with you, do they feel/sense what they see?

I would say that yes, it feels like a halberd. It's not an illusion.

I'll agree with Hyp.

The strange part is, I would imagine that the "halberd" still uses the same proficiency as the dagger, despite being the size of a halberd. I'll chalk it up to magic.

But if it Feels like a halbred...Weighs like a halberd...even if it uses the same proficiency as a halberd (which personally i don't think it should)...should it do damage like a halberd, do everything exactly as a normal halberd would do...the same would go for the armour...doesn't matter it would seem if it was leather, NOW it's scale...it's metal...feels like metal...strong as metal...why would it protect you less if you happened to be proficient in using medium armour?!

Possibly an Official response is needed to clear this up
