Certain conditions change a creatures type attribute (i.e., Humanoid, Outsider, Giant, etc), such as certain templates and prestige classes. What happens when the creature also has a subtype or descriptor? Is it retained or lost?
Example: A Stone Giant has the Earth subtype. If he somehow becomes a 10th-level Contemplative, his type changes from Giant to Outsider. Is he now an Outsider [Earth]?
