Alternate Fighter

Gotcha now. I like alot of the abilities you've put in there. I'll have to go through it some more.

How the heck I missed that one I don't know. I'm going to have to dig out my copy of 310 and go over it with a fine tooth comb.

Thanks again everyone. I really appreciate the help. I should be able to put something together from all of the great advice.

The Kensai definately sounds like exactly what you want...just take Dodge and Mobility as your 1st and Human bonus feat. :)

The Fighter variants in Dragon Magazine are, unsurprisingly, more powerful than a "normal" Fighter.

And that's OK.

Fighters are underpowered, especially after level 2.

A Fighter could get a longer skill list, 4 skill points a level, and a bonus feat every level from first to twentieth and would still not be overpowered.

So if it makes you feel better to "give up" some stuff you weren't using in order to get some bonuses at 2nd or 3rd level - you should probably just do that.

Fighters are not overpowered if they just get extra feats for free, because the current write up doesn't give them enough.

In general, if you "give up" something that you weren't going to use, that's not a real cost. But you shouldn't have to pay a real cost to spruce up the Fighter because the original is underpowered compared to the Rogue, the Wizard, and the Barbarian.

I added an idea on varying the standard fighter, for purposes of not wanting all the armor proficiencies. Will just repost it here.

By giving up the heavy armor & tower shield, the player is allowed to choose one from the following:

1) One special ability.
2) 1 extra class skill & 1 extra skill point per level.
3) One bonus feat.

By further giving up medium armor & shields, the character can choose option 2).

A character should not get more than one special ability or feat from this option.

The special abilities mentioned are either from my posts, or those out of Dragon #310. You still need to qualify for them.
