Alternative origins of the drow

I run a Mystara campaign, which has no drow (although the world does have pale subterranean shadow elves).

However, there is a pretty cool picture of a drow on the cover to the Elves of Alfheim Gazetteer with no explanation! (I'm sure in real life the artist didn't know drow weren't included in the Mystaran cosmology).

So IMC drow are to standard elves what albinos are to most other species, a rare genetic mutation resulting in a more mystically powerful dark-skinned elf with ties to shadow magic. These drow live above ground with their pale-skinned kin, but shun the light of day are are active at night. They aren't necessarily evil, but are a darker subrace in more ways than one and are somewhat feared and mistrusted by other elves. The other common races for the most part don't even know these drow exist.

Drow tend to have lonely lives as they are not a true race but rare mutations of the standard elves, and face much discrimination (if subtle). They have abilities, powers and affinities not shared by their kin. Some are lucky to be raised by tolerant clans and grow to be strong elven heroes, others become strange fey hermits at best or at worst turn to evil and prey upon their fair kin.

Another official campaign where drow officially don't exist, but have made appearances anyway, is Dragonlance. Anybody retcon drow into their DL campaigns?
