Amazing finds at thrift stores & used book stores etc?

I was in a Half-Price Books a few years back, and noticed that they had a copy of the Rise of the Runelords Map Folio, complete and in good condition, for only $20.

I made sure to snag it since, one aisle over, they had the same product behind a glass display case, where it was tagged as costing $99, which is what most places seem to sell it for today.

I've been haunting Half Price Books and similar used bookstores for RPG materials for 30 years and have had some great finds: The Complete Book of Necromancers in 2000 for $10 (along with Nightmares of Mine at half cover price in the same trip), a complete D&D Immortals set in the mid-2000s for $5, and Dawn of the Emperors with Dwarves of Rockholm, Elves of Alheim, and The Shadow Elves for $10 during the same time frame. Sadly for us, they've gotten wiser about what the market demands over the years.

There was also the time in the early 2010s when someone dropped a nearly complete HERO 5E collection at a then-local library book store, so I was able to pick up a bunch of titles for $6 each.

At a local used Book, I managed to pickup, all complete and unmarked...

Night Below Boxed Set
City of Splendors Boxed Set
2 Forgotten Realms Grey Box Sets - 1st and 2nd Edition
D&D Creature Catalog
The Magister
Isle of Terror
The Ghost if Iverness
The Village of Hommlet
Book of Marvelous Magic
Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil
and Two copies of the Temple of Elemental Evil - one which I sold to more than pay for the haul.

Total Cost - $76.00

👀❗

I have one of those, and it’s not worth that to me.

Time to add it to my growing stack of “Sell” boxes… full of stuff that I never get around to selling.

If you have old Pathfinder materials, you might want to check on what they're worth now. The first book of a lot of the adventure paths (and, apparently, related materials like some of the map folios) seem to have inflated value these days.

Shortly after the original TSR went belly up in the 90’s, vast quantities of unsold TSR 2e box sets and sourcebooks - from all their 2e worlds/series - suddenly filled the shelves of several Milwaukee Half Price Books stores.

Over a few weeks and several stores, I bought most of Planescape and rebooted Dark Sun, plus a smattering of Birthright, Forgotten Realms, Dragonlance, Spelljammer, and core splatbooks. All that I could afford - and fit in the closet in my 1-bedroom apartment. All half-price.

I remember picking up several outdated boxed sets - Spelljammer's War Captain's Companion and The Legend of Spelljammer, Ravenloft's Forbidden Lore - for $3.00 each and a few modules (one was Treasure Hunt, where you start out as 0-level PCs, and one was a solo adventure that came with a red viewing lens to let you see things on the enclosed map in the immediate area around where your PC was at the time; I've forgotten its name) for a dollar each, all at various Kay*Bee Toys stores over the course of several years.
