As long as they are covering printing costs, it's just eking out the last little bit of profit from the long tail. It seems early to be clearing out the last print run when it's at a guess likely to be at least 6 months before the 2024 edition arrives.
It's also keeping the brand awareness pump primed.
People who buy the core now while it is cheap are now more aware and connected to the game than they were yesterday
 

It is wild.

Makes me wonder if replacing them is a mistake.

Hopefully they live up to the compatible edition goal. I do think some things needed tweaking, that's kind of inevitable. The initial survey was the biggest ever for a TTRPG, and the responses to the current one is apparently far larger. They've learned some things and are adjusting course a bit.

Time will tell. Worst case I just won't use the new stuff and remember the glory days. :)
 

Marvel Multiverse RPG comes in at #1494 just after the Candlekeep Mysteries adventure.

I think that puts it at the 2nd best selling RPG. But it's early days and that number means more the longer it's stable.
