And I think it was 1d4 fire damage in Basic D&D.

Torches are generally sticks with rags on the end, I do not think of them as thick or tough as clubs unless you have metal ones (the ones in wall sconces in many movies). Maybe subdual damage for beating on somebody with the stick if it is a standard wooden one? If it was a heavy metal thing then treat it as a club (less effective then a light mace) or as a light mace with the nonweapon proficiency penalty.
