or I haven't understood your concern

You have misunderstood, I think.

Text that was created for BESM or SAS Tri-Stat, and included in BESM d20, will remain closed. It may be used in our OGL book, but it will not be part of the OGL. We license Tri-Stat text and branding rights to other companies under our Magnum Opus arrangement. We see no reason to open text not specifically created for the OGL.

If we create new concepts and text specifically for BESM d20, it will be open (save IP, naturally). This means that all character classes will be open, for example.

Our decision may not be popular amongst OGL enthusiasts, but it allows us to make products to the best of our ability.

Also, please remember the "viral" nature of Open Content that is derived from the SRD. Rules-related d20 content will be Open, by definition: It is impossible to create d20 compatible rules without them being derivative of the SRD.

So, you miss out on the defining BESM "flavor text," which may or may not be a concern to the OGL enthusiast. (I suspect not.)

GOO is understandably within their rights to restrict the "creative" or "artistic" background of the sourcebook. I don't think that's anything new on the part of any publisher.

Limited Edition...a little too expensive

"BESM D20 DELUXE LIMITED EDITION HARDCOVER
A Core Rulebook
Releasing April 2003
ISBN 1-894938-02-X
#02-699, 144 pages (approx.), $59.95 US/$89.95 CAN MSRP

For some, only the best will do and BESM d20 Deluxe Limited Edition doesn't hold back. In addition to a fantastic game system, the book features: full-colour printing on premium quality paper, dozens of gorgeous anime images, a foil-stamped leatherette hardbound cover, an exquisite dust jacket, and cloth bookmark. Supplies are limited."

144 pages, that's $90 Can for me, with taxes $103.53, so $0.72 a page. Right, I don't think that I'll be getting that, although I would love to have the LE.

Should we expect BESM d20 to be d20 compatible like d20 Modern or d20 CoC is, or more like d20 Silver Age Sentinels is?

Hearing about the issues here with d20 SAS decided me on passing, but if this looks, smells, and quacks more like the former than the latter, it's virtually a must buy.

It will be completely compatible with D&D and D20 Modern, although we have made some changes to tailor the system to more what we think it should be (Armour is damage resistance, for example; consequently, Strength does not add to the chance to hit).

In fact, by deconstructing the major D&D races and classes, we are actually showing you how to make D&D compatible with BESM d20 as well :)

so uhm... okay, >why< not make it ... OGL-only? Or have I missed something?

We believe there is value in the d20 logo, since we are not known as a d20 company. We need the logo to show d20 fans "hey, GoO is doing d20."

Besides, the product is called BESM d20. Not including the d20 logo also is, well, a little silly.

I suspect that it might be, BESM is a rulebook with little flavor text

AEG with Rokugan opens all d20 rules, including the text of d20 kata which isn't rule heavy, but its mainly a setting book, so it's not really a problem for them.

Though apparently GoO is willing to do license with some thing, so it's OK.

But I would like to be sure that it could be as open as the player handbook for D&D.

Okay, if this book is as good as it sounds, this is what I want. Where are the preorders? Will it show up in PREVIEWS?

Also, if the class abilities are point based, does it still present them like the D&D classes for those who don't want to play with points?

Thanks
Chris
