An Unusual Use for Rust Monsters

This is just a basic idea I'm working on.

A wizard has been busy breeding Rust Monsters and other different kinds of monsters for his local Lord.

The basic idea is to enchant them with buffs and other spells such as feather fall.

Then use the siege weapons, catapults and trebuchets, to launch them over the castle walls, and let them wreak havoc in the castle grounds.

The rust monsters would seek out any sort of metal sources, and could conceivably find and destroy important armories and other storage areas of armor. If they aren't stopped.

In large sieges, there can be dozens or even hundreds of Rust Monsters being used in this manner.

And of course, this tactic wouldn't be limited to just Rust Monsters either.

Now imagine if they have reduce and invisibility cast upon them, or fly.

Does the lord, who employs a large number of people who wear and use metal implements, know what his wizard is up to? Because this plot just screams out for someone to infiltrate the compound, let the rust monsters into the armory, wait a few hours, and then call for an attack.

There was an awesome Dungeon adventure long time ago that featured the heroes going into a wizards lab right after his pet rust monsters had broken free and eaten some potions that were in lead vials.....

It was quite fun as the pcs tried to figure out what was going on!

There's a good Goodman Games module with a similar random magical effect concept, The Transmuter's Last Touch. Great fun.
