I'm not so sure about that. In one of my previous campaigns (2e), the party was almost entirely goodly aligned underdark folks running on the surface. 4 drow, 2 svirfniblin (sp) and 2 duegar...plus 3 surface folks (yes, I know, a very large party). We developed our characters w/o telling the others what we were doing.
