[Anecdote] My worst nightmare...

Try this one on for size:

Ex PC, an elf cleric we left behind. Turned to a vampire, converted to Velsharoon and raised about 8 levels.

So, 17th level elven cleric vampire with the Magic domain, leading an army of undead in an enormous negative energy zone, which grants all the undead turn resistance.

So how does a 17th level elven cleric vampire with the Magic domain start a fight? Mordenkainen's Disjunction. Energy Drain. Energy draining, Elf bane longsword (did I mention we're all elves?). Firestorm. Dominate. Frickin longsword! Teleport away.

Can you say behinds kicked? Four 17th level+ PCs, whacked and hard.

We took him down after the 3rd try, but dang! that guy rocked.

You were lucky he didn't mind tricked (suggestion) some PCs to assist him.

Actually, it's funny you mention that...his first action was to dominate the Half-Orc Barbarian/Fighter.

My response to that was to "command" the half-orc to draw his sword.

His sword is a very intelligent two-handed sword...after a round of struggle, the sword was in charge for the rest of the fight, there is almost no way the half-orc can make the dc for the ego check.

And you guys are right, it was a fun fight.

3. Stake through the heart, cut off head, fill mouth with holy wafers. (can't do that while in gaseous form either).

Hm. When you cut off his head, doesn't he automatically turn into gaseous form?

That's why you have to stake through the heart first...don't ask me though...

The rules are kind of vague for Vampires. For instance, it says 3 rounds of being held in running water will kill him, taking 1/3 of his hit points each time.

So what happens if you turn him into gaseous form by reducing his hp's to zero, then submerge him for 3 rounds?
