D&D General Animal PCs?

Somewhere along the line during 3e a section for Anthropomorphic Animals was printed (probably in a DMG). I xeroxed it but forgot to write in the original book's title.

I believe the book you're referring to is Savage Species.

How would you fine people use animals as PCs in the various editions of dnd?

During 1e I ran a npc name "cool joe" a Saint Berdarnd (sp) who was a cursed paladin. If I was going to do in 5E. I would let the player choose ONE weapon and that is what their paw attack do.

A 3PP has published its own setting with ponies and other cuatruped animals,Ponyfinder, and the stats of the PCs are in the SRD.

The list of antropomorphic animals in 3rd Ed was Savage Species (I bought a lot of 3.5 books), with a picture of an onagre (donkey folk) as example and also there was some paragraph about playing no-humanoids creatures.
