Animals Extinct in Last 1000 years

At least in 3e they can only create spawn from humanoids... imagine if every animal, every insect became a shadow when it died...
I mean, the things don't eat, so they never die, and they reproduce in a day, and they eat anything living, except plants. Pretty brutal.
Not to mention one of their biggest advantages - incorporeality.

I think that aurochs have been bred back from modern cattle. I think there are a few in various zoos.

In the early part of the Roman era, I understand there were elephants in the Atlas mountains of North Africa. They were sometimes captured for gladiatorial combat.

There are also reports of a type of spotted lion in parts of Africa.

A species of auk, a bird similar to penguins, also became extinct in the last millenia.

I believe these were the type of (smallish) elephants that Hannibal tried to cross the Alps with.

Regarding the Beast of Gevaudan, I ran across a reference to it as a "hyena" in a book on the French Revolution that I'm reading. But the first time I heard of it was when I saw the BotWolf movie.
