Animals gaining levels in PC classes

So, I want to know if there is any rule that specifically says animals (normal animals, in this case an elephant) CANNOT take levels in a PC class.

I know why it might be a bad idea, how it could be explained as improbable or impossible flavor wise. But the question is, is there anything specifically saying it cannot be done, RaW?

I couldn't say really what the rules say. I tend to follow the maxim - Play what you like!

I have played Female Feral (1) Anthropomorphic African Elephant (5) Barbarian 2. I am still not entirely sure what a Feral Anthropomorphic African Elephant is. Minala was someone else's creation that I just ghost-hacked. But she was fun to play.

The only applicable rule about taking or not taking classes levels that I'm aware of is the 3 INT minimum rule.
