Animate Dead

this assumes that the corpses are within range (5ft) of the caster correct?

so technically...he could only raise a max of 6 corpses (assuming they were under the max hd he could raise) a round (even if he was surrounded by 8 corpses) without a move action. However if he wasn't surrounded by corpses he couldn't touch move and then touch again...

sorry...just need to make sure that I understand completely...

No, there's no limit to the number of corpses... because a corpse doesn't take up a full five foot square. According to game rules, they may as not exist as for squares they take up. So you could technically stack up a BILLION* corpses in one five foot square.

* Note: Your GM may attempt to insert some reality if you actually attempt this. And the Gods might strike you down and alter your language base or who knows WHAT to you for attempting to build a tower to heaven out of corpses.

I think what you mean is: "There may be any number of corpses/helpless/prone creatures in one square. A dead/helpless/prone creature does not occupy squares in the same way as a living/animate one does."

How's that? :D

ahh..so if there are a "billion" corpses in one square...the PC can animate up to his allottment and the corpses immediately get an action (the spell is a standard action, recall) or else all of the zombies occupy the same place...

My theory is/was that he could only animate one per 5 foot square because the first animated creature would then occupy that area and therefore another zombie/skeleton/whatever couldn't occupy the same place....although I think I was also assuming that the creatures aren't prone when they are resurrected...which is probably not right and yeah unlimited prone creatures could occupy the same space...

As a player I too wouldn't animate during battle--however I have a character that seems to think it is a wise thing to do....and I can't tell him he can't--I just have to make sure that I have a solid set of rules to play by every time that he does it....can't be changing things to make them fit...
