Animated movie from the early 80's??

Hoping you all can help me here, since the group that I thought went with me to see this has no recollection...

The movie was a theatrical release, animated, and I think that the title had "Star" in the name...

The plot was science fantasy - the boy hero was fighting against an empire of robot soldiers - he found a sword that only cut non-living things (it passed through living things without effect)

Pretty vague, huh!

Any recollection??

Yep. It was the first full length 3D animated film, and that's probably the only distinction it will ever receive I was all hyped up to see this in the theater. It came in town on a Wed, played Wed + Thur, was gone on Friday before I could see it. Sad.

I rented it later, though. I seem to remember it was pretty good; certainly not the worst I ever saw.

Never saw this one but looking at the character list I have to appreciate any movie that has 'Shooter' and 'Zygon' as characters

I remember this movie from HBO or Showtime. It was pretty good. I was much younger when I saw it and the cyborgs kinda creeped me out.
