And I was going to add a parantheses there, basically saying that while property tax per se might be anachronistic, it's an easy way to replicate the myriad taxes that likely would be levied. Though as others have noted, there were some forms of property taxes in the past.

A good rule of thumb, then as now, is 10% of the total cost of the building is needed to cover taxes and maintenence. That will not cover special assessments the community might levie for street repairs or upkeep of the local defenses, but is should serve as the norm. The 1% per month is also a good one for such matters.
