Another point-buy question.

Lord Pendragon

First Post
*sigh* All right, this will be my last question about the point-buy system, I promise.

All stats start at 8. 9-14 costs one point per ability point, 15-16 costs two points per ability point, and 17-18 costs three points per ability point.

The question is, can you lower a stat below 8, and if so how many points are put back into the pool per ability point?

Thanks in advance. :)

By the rules, no!

But I would suggest a two-for-one as a house rule, but maybe I am just too darn nice.

(When I say two-4-one, I off course mean lowering two points gives you one point to buy with.)

Thanks, Aggemam!

I'll just build my PC according to the rules, then, and leave his charisma at 8. I had felt it should be lower (being an ogre cleric of a death god,) but the rules is da rules. :)

Your Charisma should be plenty low already. Since an ogre by the core rules has a Charisma modifier of -4 (standard Cha 7 on MM p. 144), if you only point-buy a base score of 8 for him, your PC will have a Charisma score of 8 - 4 = 4 points.

Unless there's some extra rule you're using that I'm not aware of (say, perhaps you use DMG Table 2-5 to convert it to a 6 instead of a 4).

Hey, by the rules, you always welcome to lower it further. You just do not get any points for it.

However, why do you feel it is should have a Cha score of lower than 4 ?

(The racial adjustment for an Ogre is; Str +10, Dex -2, Con +4, Int -4, and Cha -4.)

The race in question is actually the ogran from the Iron Kingdoms campaign setting, rather than the ogre from the MM. I was simplifying. :o I don't have the racial modifiers for the ogran with me (an Iron Kingdoms race, and only printed in the modules which the DM has,) so I'm currently building my PC in the blind. I figure I can always make slight adjustments after I know what the bonuses/penalties are. :)
