As I see it, it boils down to:
"Harsh compared to what?"
The offenders will live, but have been taken out of the fight, at least for now. Ask the other players what they would have done, and see if their answers make any sense to you. If so, your paladin can change; if not, then maybe they should be taking lessons from you instead.
Striving for perfection is noble; expecting it is hubris. Sneaky trap, no?
