Answer me these Eberron questions three...

A little late than never, I’ve been collecting and reading Eberron since its debut 3 years ago, but January 2007 is the first time I’ll be running a campaign there, much to the surprise & joy of my players. With that in mind, I have been studying message boards, fan reaction to published work, and have already answered most of my own questions to fit my group’s style. However, these remain:

1) Just how does WotC/Mr. Baker pronounce Cyre? I mean, every player in my group currently says it differently and we sound silly. And, if I run into a developer or seminar next GenCon I don’t want to sound like an idiot. :) Sy-ree? Seer? Ky-ree? Keer-ie? Sire?

2) In your home campaign, do you play up or take advantage of the fact that during the Last War House Deneith royally screwed up with their hobgoblin mercs that went rogue and slaughtered and enslaved tons of folk? Was there any fallout in your game between the house and the nations and the impact?

3) Have you run a Dungeon Magazine adventure in Eberron that wasn’t written for it, but contained many elements of one (travel to exotic locals, or a really well-thought out mystery, engaging NPCs and the like) that your players would never have guessed it wasn’t an Eberron adventure?

Many thanks for any insight!

1) Sire, since it seems to me Cy tends to sound like "Sigh"

2) No but then I've always wanted to alter Eberron so that it gets to become the new Scarred Lands via the fact much like the Marvel vs DC comics thing eventually became Amalgam Universe. :)

3) No really but then I've only just now started using Dungeon...and it's Age of Worms. :)

1) Keith Baker pronounces Cyre as follows, 'seerie' like the word eerie with the 's' sound on the front. However, it was quickly noted that each nation prounces the other nations' names differently. Therefore, a Kaarn and Brelish peasant would both use different accent to pronounce the names of other nations. So technically, no one is wrong.

2) It's even worse for House Denieth, they have been infiltrated by the Inspired Agents of Riedra!!!

3) My players don't really care what campaign I run, or the campaign a specific adventure is set in. As long as they have a good time, we call it whatever they want.

Well good luck with the game DM_Jeff!

(1) Keith has always held out for there not to be official pronunciations for Eberron names. But he has said that in his won campaign, the locals called Cyre SEE-ree, whereas the Karrns called it SIRE, etc. Basically go with what your players feel comfortable with, and call any discrepancies 'local accents'. :)

(2) I have an Heir of Deneith in my group. So far I haven't made any specific call about the attitude of others to the House Deneith. Except that in Darguun, the heir was still most welcome - even now Darguun sends its sons and daughters into battle on behalf of the House. And in my world Deneith lost control of border patrols and customs duties. Partly it's that the House is so large and influential, and the only major source of mercenaries. Though it does, I think, explain why so many Warforged were purchased.

(3) So far I have only used Eberron specific adventures, though that's just for ease of use. I think a great many adventures can be transplanted into Eberron with some planning. The one problem I tend to see is a lack of a large number of nations - many Dungeon adventures are predicated on adventures in out-of-the-way nations which Eberron lacks. Still a bit of fiddling gives you a great many smaller territories on the islands that surround Khorvaire or make up the Lhazaar Pricipalities.

1) We pronouce Cyre the same as 'Sire'.
2) Haven't touched Deneith yet, but now I'm going to have to look at them a little closer!
3) I've used a number of non-Eberron adventures. Typically I'll change a few details to merge it simultaneously with Eberron and ongoing storylines.

1) I believe in the Ask Keith Baker thread, he said it was pronounced "SEER".
2) Poor, poor Denieth. They've gotten all sorts of flak, and one of my group's members is trying to ferret out the Inspired presence there.
3) We're running Savage Tide in Eberron right now. Sasserine is in Q'Barra.

I'm sorry, Nightfall, but the 4th level commander of Argonth just isn't compatable with the 86th level Assathi psychopath.

Kaodi,

:p I meant more like having the Assatthi be harbingers for the Lords of Dust and Doom. Plus warforged were Corean's answer to fighting the hordes of the Titans. ;)

Regarding pronunciation, thank you. I'll just tell everyone (who all have different backgrounds) that they're saying it right. I'm glad they took the 'we don't care' approach, it makes life so much easier.

Thanks for the input, folks, I'm wiser for it!
