Antimagic field

Sounds like the lich will be needing a new lair. I'd recommend a permanent Mordekainen's Private Sanctum somewhere that can be reached only by teleportation/dimension door/etc. to reduce chance of a pesky divination revealing his location again. Then fill it with a poison gas of some sort. That should mostly negate teleport-antimagic working again. :]

Well, this particular lich is part of an adventure where his lair is the inside of a huge undead dire bear. For future liches, a poison gas filled lair seems like a fine idea (sometimes- I don't want to use the same trick everytime they face a lich).

It sounds in truth like a very successful encounter - I wouldn't call it an unsatisfying resolution for the players, so I'd say mission accomplished.

With regards to the AMF, I'd say there really isn't much he could have done - if a spellcaster is enveloped in an antimagic field, and cannot escape, he's screwed. No contest. The lich can't even use his chill touch in the field.

The only other suggestion I'd have is for the lich to have something that would MAKE the PCs want to get away from him. One example, is prior to combat have both hands coated with black lotus extract. (Poison, Fort Save DC 26, 3d6 CON / 3d6 CON). He gets grappled, touches a PC, PC likely loses 3d6 CON, the other PCs will wonder "What the :):):):)?!?!" and BACK OFF. If they don't, then it's Barrel #2! It's expensive, but as a last resort, the Lich could afford it.

What, I say, what, do you have against me that you want to have me "gloping" on top of an antimagic person? I just wonder?

Well, fine. Last time I try to set you up on a blind date.

What if someone suggested they fill an area behind a wall filled with takyris, eh? Then waves of takyris could "glop" on top of said person....

Mmmm. Waves of takyris glopping all over the unsuspecting adventurers... it might be too much for them... but what a way to go!

You didn't mention it and I'm curious since you said they all dogpiled lichy. Did they save against this?

Fear Aura (Su): Liches are shrouded in a dreadful aura of death and evil. Creatures of less than 5 HD in a 60-foot radius that look at the lich must succeed on a Will save or be affected as though by a fear spell from a sorcerer of the lich's level. A creature that successfully saves cannot be affected again by the same lich's aura for 24 hours.

If they failed their save things would have gone very differently for them no?

"Less than 5 hit dice." If the cleric was casting AMF, then that cleric, as well as the party, was possibly as high as 15th level when they faced the Lich.

Sorry! I've had this window open for a while (before I ran to an hour and 15 minute class, actually) - and I didn't reload it before I clicked the "quote" button.
