Your micro-analyzing the situation, the game is supposed to be simple and fun. There are d20 books out there that deal with this as well.
I would have them make a knowledge check:nature to properly identify the poiison sack, a DC 15 refelx save to remove it with no mishaps. An Alchemy DC 20 check to properly distill/bottle it.
Also be careful how much you tell them they get. I made the mistake of saying they recovered X ounces. That ended up being 288,000 gold pieces worth of wyvern poison doses. Not good to give a 4th or 5th level party
