Any monsters get -weaker- in 3e

I was perusing the MM today, seeing how the Hook Horror got totally pumped up (from 5 to 10 HD). It got me thinking ...

Have any monsters actually gotten weaker (relative to other monsters) in their 3e convertion?

I think the leviathan (MM2) got weakened down a lot. Didn't he have like 96 HD in 2e? And now he has 36.

According to the 2E MM, Leviathan were from 36 to 72 HD. So starting them off at 36 in 3E seems fine.

Lycanthropes, somewhat. Now that DR can be overcome with enough damage, you can actually hurt them without silver or magical weapons.

Admittedly, it might not be enough damage to really count, but with criticals and strength bonuses starting earlier, it's more possible to hurt them than it used to be.

Well the fighters (fighting men*) are more powerful than ever in 3e and a lot of monsters are wrought from the fighter class.

*Let's not isolate the grognards**, the original name of fighters in D&D was fighting men!

**Grognard is a term for someone who plays sand box miniature war games upon which D&D was derived***.

***D&D was actually sort of an "expansion pack" for a war game called Chainmail****.

****There was a derivative of 3e called Chainmail for a more warlike game but it sort of went into obscurity*****.

*****See Chaosium's****** Ringworld Roleplaying Game for more on obscurity.

******Chaosium is the publisher of Stormbringer and Call of Cthulhu*******.

*******The works of Lovecraft and Moorcock have always been a feature of D&D more or less********.

********Moorcock's Elric appeared in Gods, Demigods and Heroes with Cthulhu appearing in Dragon magazine later both were featured in Deities and Demigods but were removed in the second printing due to a dispute. For the 3e, Dragonlords of Melnibone' by Chaosium featured Moorcock's world and Call of Cthulhu D20 by WOTC and featuring ex-employee Monte Cook********* gave us Lovecraft's dark visions.

*********The guy who changed the World of Greyhawk's dark god of pure evil Tharizdun's alignment into chaotic evil by mistake and stood by it.

Yugoloths. Compare the 2e versions to the 3e versions. A 3e Ultroloth vs. a 2e Ultroloth is like a 6 year old girl vs. Rosanne Barr at the all-you-can eat buffet line.

Also true for Arcanaloths (Arcaneodaemons in 1st ed). I believe they could cast spells as an 18th level wizard. This has now been bumped down to 13th in MM2 IIRC.

Sorry that was cold.

But 100% true. ;)

Seriously the fighter hits more often in 3e than ever (5% more of the time than in 1e) thus making the fighter based monsters hitting just as much.
