The first patch will add copy protection requirements for those who had the non-protected version, meaning you'll need to have your CD in the drive.

I beg your pardon? They are going to force you to carry around the CD if you want to use it on your laptop?

My interest in this has just taken a massive nosedive. I had to ditch "Autoroute" when they started requiring the CD to be available each time I wanted to run the app.

Please tell me this isn't what it sounds like? :(

Well, that's certainly annoying. I was so pleased that eTools didn't require the CD (or even an install!). I use it at home, at work and at the various places I game by putting it on my "gaming" CD, and running it from there. I'm not handing it out to friends or anything...
    How irritating.

Asked Scott (got lucky, caught him on his way out of town for the week), he says:

Well thats good news, thanks Eric. I prefer not having to have the CD in to run, but its certainly no big deal. I guess it is surprising in the first place it wasnt required from the start. As long as we dont have to bother with sending in the CD's for exchange then I guess its no big deal.

Apparently through some miscommunication there was a fairly small batch run without protection, WotC changed their mind (or maybe communicated their desire more clearly) and the rest were run with copy protection. That latter batch, it appears, also got a readme file added. As I understand it WotC wasn't originally planning on selling the non protected version at all, and why they ended up doing it is a mystery to me. In any case once we all reach version 1.1 we'll all be the same :)

Well that just made me remove it from my hard drive. I have one of the original presses. I use my laptop for game preparation and it is one of the more portable models without built-in removable media drives. I would have to carry my external cdrom, which is a major annoyance for me. I would like to have continued using it as one of my tools, but Campaign Suite will have to be it.

Yeah. I am not going to cry. It is their product. I either take it or leave it as it is. If I thought it was worth the hassle, I would reinstall and tote the CDROM drive. I will watch e-tools mature through my friends copies and maybe reinstall if it meets more of my requirements. I just kinda doubt it will though.

In all fairness to wotc and fluid, I cant blame them for using copy protection. I saw quite a few posts from people already that said they were "evaluating" it from a friends CD without buying it. I want ET to get the proper support, and sales will help that happen. Im against software theft so i have no problem with them using a protection program. I understand how those who dont want to have to have the CD in to run it feel, but the way things are these days it just has to be. Im just glad we wont have to send in the CD's.
