Any one feel there is simply not enough to go on?

Any one feel there is simply not enough to go on as far as the mechanics and how they were derived. After looking over it, I can give feed back about some certain things (armor being one of them) however I have no way to utilize the character creation rules.

Well as someone who likes tactical options and 4th ed kind of things, yes! I am not especially pining to play the type of game presented except to see how it works.

Basically I am interested in seeing how modularity will work and what some of those modules are going to look like both in-game and character creation.

I can totally understand how to some gamers it might look that way but it's funny... to me it's the other way around.

I could totally extrapolate from that playtest and have my own complete DnD version, that I could use for years. I can figure out chargen in reverse. The spells and monsters are inspiring enough that I could come up with new ones. The mechanics are clear, elegant so once again I could come up with other stuff as needed.

This is very close to my ideal DnD as is. With some homebrewing, I can probably use this package as my go-to DnD ruleset.

Regardless of whether you can extrapolate rules, we still have no confirmed information to help with the play test. Also what really bothers me is that there are many thing there left undescribed at all, first one I noticed was the centipede had a command called Skuttle which I can not for the life of me figure out what it does or why its there.

As far as the actual rules go , debatably the largest portion of the game is all about leveing up . It's what caused the rift between fighters and casters. I would have thought that leveling up and balancing between classes would take priority.

Not enough to go on for what? To offer playtest feedback on the contents of the package? Sure there is. To run an entire D&D campaign? No, of course not. It's a playtest package, not a free game.

The letter with the playtest pack explicitly says "Our goal at this stage is to fine-tune the core rules. We’ll ask for your feedback on character creation, advancement, and adventure design rules in the coming months."

So, they're not expecting you to playtest the character creation rules yet.

On my initial glance I think it if fine. They want to focus the play test on certain elements which the play test materials provide. Why focus on character creation if the core bits aren't where they are going to end up. Once these rules get tweaked then they can start expanding outwards to the other elements.

Don't think of it as play testing the entire D&D Next game, think of it as play testing specific elements and then as time goes on expanding outwards from there.

This. And there's enough in there to give feedback on what they're looking for on this go around.

Sorry to be blunt, but do you understand the whole playtesting thing?

You are not supposed to provide feedback on what you read, you are supposed to provide feedback on what you have played.

Study the playtesting package, setup a game with your friends, record the results (which include also your feelings on how well things work, how easy to use them, how clear the rules are written, does it feel like D&D, does it leave you wanting for more... anything, not just balance) and that will be your playtesting job. You are supposed to play with what is in the package, which is not a complete game.
