Any other Scrollworks Supporters?

So I notice that Fiery Dragon is now providing Scroll Works with some material that comes from their module campaign world, Karathis. Any chance we can see others do the same like Necromancer Games? I think that'd be a great way to add some depth and detail to the "module" worlds without coming out with full fledge sourcebooks while supporting a smaller publication at the same time.

I too have noticed the recent addition of FDP items to Scrollworks. I great little zine, it's nice to see a big name company help it out with some money and materials. Hopefully others will follow suit as your idea, Joe, is a good one. It's a win-win scenario for each party.

Hi, Joe!

When I first came up with the idea of Scrollworks, I thought about approaching a publisher and offering the Sworks pages as a vehicle for monthly campaign support. This was before the d20STL/OGL, so there weren't many folks to talk to. Months and months later, it's interesting that Scrollworks is fulfilling (to a teeny tiny degree) the role I originally imagined for it.

Nevertheless, I'm not sure that the readers will find material from publishers beside Fiery Dragon. A key reason is that I want to continue development of my own PI and this would be harder to do if I run material from lots of different publishers. To a lesser extent, I want to limit publisher access to Scrollworks because Gaming Frontiers already covers that well.

I think the best support comes from subscribers. Jason and James of FDP were subscribers for months before they began sending me material. CrazyMage is another great supporter - financially as a subscriber and creatively as a contributor. Checking my inbox, I see that you, Joe, are a supporter too! Cheesy as it sounds, Scrollworks is primarily a grass roots affair because of its format (and limited distribution). That's part of its charm, I think.

Game on!

Well, I've heard a lot of good things about Scrollworks and I personally feel that like Gray Worlds, The Gamers Connection, and a whole host of other magazines, if you don't support them, they do fade away.

Unfortunately, while I've never been 'ripped off' by any of those magazines (or any other really), I do get bummed when I join and the magazine folds. (Anyone remember Morningstar Rising? Another of my faves gone!)

Looking forward to seeing those upcoming issues.

I have been subscribing to Scrollworks for more than a year and it just keeps getting better. Christian really puts his heart and soul into this magazine and hasn't missed a beat, even with a new baby. I am honored to be a subscriber and contributor.

:D Ed

I can't praise Christian and Scrollworks enough. Though I've been out of the loop for awhile, I hope to roll up my sleeves and get back into the fray of things.

As I've let my dragon magazine subscription lapse and continue to get my Scrollworks Zine...I'll happily state that I enjoy Scrollworks a lot more. It may not have the great hype.. or the full color images. But it is a well designed zine and has some good content.

#23 Notes

Well, just received my issue and here are a few notes.

The two NPC classes, Constables and Watchman didn't really do anything for me. Perhaps it's because I keep remembering the uber Sentinel's with their various abilities, the perfect foils for assassins. I also generally don't seem to have as much use for NPC classes as I did in first editon. They will fill some nice roles in some of the smaller towns I use though.

The map for Turil's Hollow Constabulary is something I"m a little torn on. On one hand, I think that the computer generated art looks cool. On the other, I generally prefer maps that are grid based and more useable for game play. (Perhaps one of the future things that can happen are some jpg files that grid the areas out. That'd be perfect for someone like... oh, SkeletonKey Games who does similiar material already to do.)

The take on the goblins is something I'm not really going to be able to incorporate. I like the concept, good goblins with a different background and society information, but to me, goblins are slaves for the orcs and other strong races! Ride those squigs damn you! Ride!

For Faces in theCrowrd, the urban villains are a good mix. I like the fact that the stats are seperate from the background material. I'm wondering if Nicole, a bully for the most part, wouldn't have been better off with a level or two of fighter, or even Thug from T&T I. First off, let me state that while I'm no huge fan of Dan Smith, the fact that a well known artist does work for Scrollworks is great. The art here is better then in some professional D20 companies. (you know who you are!)

The Deities of Kalendia, the Fiery Dragon setting, really made me happy. Ever since NeMoren's Vault, I've been using that as a default setting with some minor gods here and there and it's great to see some 'real' info. Couped with FD's website and tidbits they let slip out there, some real detail is coming along nicely.

Well, that's my two cents. Glad I subscribed and hope that the quality continues. Kudos on the color cover by the way. Great stuff.

Joe - Christian commissioned me to do three maps. He has had them for a month or so and I imagine you will see them in upcoming issues. They are greyscale, but easily the quality of everything SkeletonKey Games has put out there. I won't go into this too much, Christian can comment further if he would like.

Cheers - Ed
