Any suggestions for a new character?

Hey all,

I'm creating a lawful good character in a new campaign, and I need some advice on interesting or useful ways to play or build him. I'm thinking of emphasizing fighting and divine magic. Any general suggestions?

I imagine him well like an exorcist of the church of the silver flame (it’s a PC from Eberron). He would be a follower of Kossuth who has a Neutral Clergy, and also a Lawful Neutral clergy. The adaptation is easy and why not to imagine a Lawful Good flame-sect who sees his flame as secretly good, not just neutral, and suited for purifying evil from the world.

Now, I’m hesitating to play between:

-> paladin 5
Pros: weapon and armor proficiency, smite evil, detect evil, divine grace, divine health, aura of courage, mount
Cons: poor turning undead, poor lay on hands

-> marshal* 2 / priest 3
Pros: skills, weapon and armor proficiency, minor aura, large choice of spells, 2 domains spells, turning undead
Cons: prepare spell

-> marshal* 2 / favored soul 3
Pros: skills, weapon and armor proficiency, minor aura, very good saves, spontaneous casting, turning undead
Cons: limited spell

-> or …

I don't try to become high-powered but I want a viable character who will survive. But don’t forget his church forms one minority and the campaign takes place in a war context. I especially try to create a character being in the service of the others and being able to defence him-self against the evil. The keywords are original and uncommon.

The character is able to use a bow (for the respect of the silver flame)

What is a good race? Human (very typical :\ ), half-elf, elf ( :confused: with a star elf, it’s optimization), dwarf (strange with a bow :uhoh: ), halfling, shifter… ?

Maybe some of your own opnions about this?

Thanks for your help.

Isn't Kossuth Lawful Neutral?

That means he's got Lawful Good, Lawful Neutral, and Lawful Evil clergy.

In fact, he also sponsors three orders of monks (whose names I'm going to slaughter here, I think):

1. LG Order of the Pheonix
2. LN Brothers and Sisters of the Pure Flame
3. LE Disciples of the Salamander

Honestly, I think the paladin might be your best place to start. You can even describe your attempts to lay on hands in a firey fashion.

I know those orders but i'd like to pick up the "exorcist of the silver flame " PC (from Eberron) and that's why i create a "new" LG church : the silver flame.

In fact, we use all books from wotc. There is too much choice. loll

For the class, I am hesitating between paladin 5, cleric 5 or favorid soul 5.

A paladin with a bow is original and and why not take the racial substitution proposed in the races of the wild (ranged smite evil). "You can even describe your attempts to lay on hands in a firey fashion." ... good idea for the visual effect :p it's funny.

A cleric... mmm i lose the handling of bow but i've 2 domain spell.

A favorid soul has a good magic like sorceror.

I think you'd probably be best with 5 levels of cleric really.. pick up the war domain with your dieties favored weapon and use it with all of the weapon powers you will be getting (pure flavor here).

Oh, wait, I just checked.. you can only choose between exorcism, good, law, and protection..

Well, unless your dm doesnt mind I guess there goes that idea.. I thought it would be really fun ;) Especially as clerics are not proficient normally with longbows.. Personally, if I was the dm, flavor would override rules in this case..

Still though, exorcism domain is pretty cool, although I dont really feel the same about the other three...lol

With cleric the + spell levels will be worth a lot more, especially if you play long enough to run out of levels in the exorcist to take.

Although I hate to say it but straight cleric would likely be a more powerful character in basically every way.. not that concluding such is surprising, but it could be an issue later on. Losing 4 caster levels is quite a hit.

My suggestion is a Paladin halfling
-Straight Paladin can be pretty effective in combat (and can pick up a cleric cohort for buffs).
-A mounted halfling can manuever around as well as any medium character in narrow dungeons, and can do things like spirited charge and/or ride-by.
-Mounted on an flying creature (bee or arrowhawk), halflings can get a big advantage, and can almost always get a smiting, spirited lance charge in on the first round.

I'm a sucker for split-classes. I would think Marshall-Favoured Soul would be an excllent combination, as would be a Paladin-Favored Soul. For race, I'd consider Aasimar if your DM will allow it (and hand-wave the stupid level adjustment), or any race that has a +CHA modifier.
