D&D 4E Any word on Mounted Combat for 4E?

RigaMortus2

First Post
I have yet to hear ANYTHING regarding Riding mounts, or Mounted Combat. Can anyone just "ride" a mount (like they can in 3E)? Is there a Ride skill? Is Mounted Combat much different than it is now?

Any play testers out there want to weigh in? Is it in? Is there a lot of info on it, or just a little bit? Does that seems like an area WotC needs to expand on, or does it look pretty much complete? How different is it than mounted combat in 3E?

I remember something about a similarity with DDM mounted combat rules, and I remember the poster saying he didn't like it so much, or that it wasn't what he wanted, something like that.

Since everyone will have at least Half level in the ride skill, dms will be able to toss out a mounted adventure that everyone can participate in, so that's something to look forward to.

Since mounted combat always slowed down the game in 3.5, 4e will not allow characters to ride horses. Instead, between scenes, they will simply appear where they need to go.

There was a post about Paladins having the option to get a Special Mount so I think it is very likely.
I would like to see them separate Special Mounts from the Paladin class, so, for instance, a Rider of Rohan could have a Shadowfax-like steed.

That would be weird, since 2.0 mount rules don't even exist for DDM yet! And the original mount rules were kind of a mess, and had to be clarified in rather a lot of detail.

Mearls talked about it on the WotC boards a couple of months ago:

There are rules for it in the DMG and player options for it in the PH. It's in the DMG because DMs have the option of giving out mounts and using them as extra party members (like in 3e), or using rules similar to the mount rules in the latest set of D&D Minis.

We also allow the option for DMs to mix the two: mounts that are low intelligence or that don't normally attack in melee use rules similar to DDM, a creature like a dragon uses rules similar to 3e (it's effectively an extra PC).

This was back in November, so it may have changed since then.

Sounds good to me.
