I never use 'maps' (at least not conventional ones)
Instead I use a grid pattern and in each grid write a specific 'macro description' So eg a 4 by 4 grid (16 squares might be an entire dungeon with Space 1 being 'Entrance gate (wooden DR 7), 3 goblin guards, old stone walls access to grid 2, 7 and sight to 8"
I then wing the details perhaps saying
"the entrance to Stonekeep is an old wooden gate reinforced with wrought iron. The gates are 10 feet high and fixed into strong stone columns. However the columns are becoming lichen covered. You see three goblins dressed in leather armour playing dice outside the gate, their weapons - half-spears- left leaning against the wall..."
